Jot down a list of the first thing you think of when you ask yourself these questions (answer as many as you can): -If I were a color, what color would I be? (from red to the inside-of-a-watermelon-seed color.) -What shape would I be? (an airplane wing shape, a boot shape, a parallelogram, a cone, a diamond.) -What movement would I be? (glide, hop, wiggle, spin) -What sound? -What animal? -What song? -What number? (infinity, googolplex, eight, sixteen) -What car? (details: year, color, condition) -What piece of furniture? -What food? -What musical instrument? -What place? -What element in nature? (dust, galaxy, waterfall) -What kind of tree? -What’s something I’m afraid of? -What’s the word hiding behind my eyes?
Now, make a list of action verbs, going from common to obscure. Spin, clarify, fiddle, fling, lunge, slug, slam, spiral, splurge, balance, value, leap, stop, reply, etc. Finally, we’ll pull it all together. Put down the words “I am…” and link it all together. Write about yourself using answers to the questions above paired with the action words you’ve collected. There are no rules to how you pair the words together. Just make sure when you say you are like something, that you explain how or why you are like that in that line as well. If you get tired of using I am to start your lines, use these variations: I will be, I want to be, I used to be, I let go of, I’ve forgotten, I remember, and so on.
For example:
Can you see me now? I am a diamond, precious, rare, and genuine with faults only the trained eye can detect; I am eggshell white, matching any decor of a multi-cultural world. I am older, but I haven't forgotten how to look at the world through the eyes of a child.
I used to be the quiet church mouse, faintly squeaking from the back corner but now, I am a colorful peacock, displaying the full array of colors that shows the world what I'm made of. I rev up like an '08 sky blue convertible Mustang, American made and proud of it.
I am the sound of a thousand twinkling stars, faintly proclaiming existence and unity. I am that unsure voice in the choir, straining to find the right note Hoping to blend with the rest to create perfect harmony and beauty.
I let go of perfection, knowing I cannot be But still striving to be everything I can in my family's eyes. I will be everything, knowing I expect nothing less...
